2018 Ford Focus knock-sensor — what it does and when to service it

On the petrol 2018 Focus, the knock-sensor is the engine’s ears. It’s a piezoelectric microphone bolted to the block that listens for knock (pinging) and lets the PCM trim ignition timing and, on EcoBoost models, boost and fuel, to keep things smooth and safe. That means better performance on our varied local fuels (91 to 98 RON), improved economy, and solid engine protection under load and on hot days.
It’s largely a fit-and-forget part, but heat, age or a damaged harness can spoil the signal. Typical clues include a check engine light with codes like P0325–P0328, dull performance, higher fuel use, audible pinging under load, or the PCM pulling timing so it feels flat. Ignoring persistent knock risks piston and bore damage, so it’s worth sorting.
Good servicing habits for a 2018 Focus knock-sensor:
- During major services or any intake/manifold-off jobs (60–120,000 km), visually check the sensor and loom for oil soak, hardening or chafe.
- Ensure the mounting boss is clean and dry, no sealant or tape. The sensor must sit flat for proper signal.
- If replaced, use a quality OE-equivalent part and tighten to the workshop manual torque spec, over- or under-tightening can skew readings.
- Route the harness exactly as per factory to avoid induced noise from alternator or ignition leads.
- After replacement, clear DTCs and adaptives with a scan tool and road test through light-to-heavy load so the PCM relearns.
DIY replacement is achievable for a confident home mechanic: disconnect the battery negative, gain access (often under the intake on 1.5/2.0 petrol, near the front of the block on 1.0), unbolt the old sensor, clean the pad, refit and torque correctly, then reconnect and scan. If in doubt, a trusted workshop can test the signal and confirm whether the sensor or wiring is at fault.

How do you know the knock-sensor has failed on a 2018 Focus?
Usually the MIL comes on with codes such as P0325–P0328. You might also notice pinging under load, sluggish acceleration, or higher fuel use because the PCM is pulling timing to protect the engine.
A quick diagnostic with a scan tool to check live knock retard and inspect the harness and mounting is the best way to confirm before replacing the sensor.
Can you drive with a bad knock-sensor?
It’ll often run, but it’s not a great idea. The PCM may default to conservative timing that saps power and economy, and if actual knock isn’t detected properly, long-term engine damage is possible. Get it checked and sorted promptly.
Does fuel choice affect the knock-sensor?
Yes. Lower-octane fuel can make the sensor busier as the PCM trims timing. Using the recommended RON for your engine helps reduce knock events. The sensor doesn’t “wear out” from this, but constant heavy knock isn’t healthy for the engine.
