2018 Ford Escape pedal pads — what they are, why they matter, and when to swap them

Based on technical references — including the Ford Workshop Manual (Brake Controls section), Ford global parts catalogues listing a “Brake Pedal Pad” for 2017–2019 Escape/Kuga, and roadworthiness guidance such as NZTA VIRM/WOF and Australian ADR safety requirements for non‑slip pedal surfaces — the 2018 Ford Escape uses serviceable rubber pedal pads on the brake pedal, and on the clutch pedal for manual models. The accelerator pedal is an integral assembly with a textured tread and no separate pad.

On a 2018 Escape, pedal pads are simply the grippy rubber covers that sit over the metal pedal arm. Their job is to give reliable shoe traction in the wet, reduce foot fatigue, and help the vehicle meet safety requirements for non‑slip controls. Over time they harden, glaze, crack, or wear smooth, which can make a driver’s foot slip at the worst possible moment.

For autos, there’s a single serviceable pad on the brake pedal. For manuals, there’s one each on brake and clutch. The accelerator doesn’t have a removable pad and generally isn’t serviced unless the whole pedal module is replaced.

A quick look during each service is smart. If the rubber is shiny, smooth, cracked, or the edges are curling away from the metal, it’s due. Many owners find they last 3–5 years, but high‑kilometre city driving can wear them sooner.

  • Tell‑tale signs: slippery feel in wet weather, visible cracks, missing ribs, or a pad that won’t sit flat on the pedal.
  • Replacement tips: clean the bare pedal with mild detergent, warm the new pad slightly to make it pliable, then hook the top lip and roll it on. Make sure it’s fully seated all round.
  • Avoid silicone dressings or tyre shines on pedals — they make them slick.
  • Use pads that match the Escape/Kuga pedal shape
