For the 2017 RAV4 AWD, the centre-bearing (also called the centre support bearing) sits midway along the two-piece propeller shaft. Its job is to support the shaft, keep it aligned under load, and soak up vibration so the cabin stays quiet and the driveline stays smooth. In normal operation it’s a sealed bearing housed in a rubber isolator that bolts to the vehicle’s underbody. There’s nothing to lubricate, but it does need a periodic look during routine servicing.

Because the bearing is sealed, contamination and heat are its main enemies. Worn engine or gearbox mounts can accelerate failure by changing driveline angles, so it’s smart to have mounts checked if a new vibration appears. If a persistent NVH issue remains after bearing replacement, a shaft balance or full prop shaft assembly may be the cleaner fix. None of this applies to 2WD RAV4s, which don’t run a rear prop shaft and therefore don’t have a centre-bearing to worry about.
