2017 Lexus IS transmission filter: which models use one, and how to look after it
Based on Lexus workshop information (TIS) and Aisin service documentation for the 6‑ and 8‑speed automatics fitted to the 2017 IS range, the petrol automatic models (e.g., IS200t/IS300/IS350, including AWD where applicable) use a serviceable, pan‑mounted transmission oil strainer commonly referred to as a transmission filter. By contrast, the IS300h hybrid uses an e‑CVT transaxle that does not have a replaceable transmission filter, it relies on internal screens and magnets and fluid condition.
For 2017 IS petrol automatics, the transmission filter’s job is to trap fine clutch material and debris so the Aisin transmission’s precision valves, solenoids and bearings stay healthy. It sits inside the transmission sump, drawing fluid through a gauze element before the pump circulates it through the valve body and torque converter. Keeping that filter fresh helps maintain smooth shifts, protects the oil pump and reduces wear.
Lexus specifies “sealed” servicing with WS‑type ATF, but many local workshops recommend preventative fluid and filter service in Australian and New Zealand conditions. As a practical guide:
- Normal use: consider ATF and filter service around 100,000–120,000 km or 6–8 years.
- Heavy use (towing, hot climates, lots of city stop‑start): 60,000–80,000 km or 4–6 years.
Replacement involves removing the pan, cleaning the magnets, fitting a new strainer and pan gasket/sealant, then refilling with the correct Lexus/Toyota WS‑spec fluid and setting the level at the specified fluid temperature via the level plug. Because these gearboxes are temperature‑critical and use a specific fill procedure, it’s a good idea to have a technician with the right scan tool and service data handle it.
Clues it might be time for attention include harsher or delayed shifts, shudder under light throttle, dark or burnt‑smelling ATF, or a weeping pan gasket. Left too long, a restricted strainer can starve the pump and accelerate clutch wear.
Note: the IS300h hybrid doesn’t use a replaceable transmission filter. For that model, stick to fluid condition checks and scheduled transaxle fluid changes as per Lexus service information.
Popular questions
Does my 2017 Lexus IS have a transmission filter?
Yes for petrol automatics with Aisin 6‑ or 8‑speed gearboxes, there’s an internal, serviceable strainer. The IS300h hybrid’s e‑CVT does not have a user‑replaceable filter.
How often should the transmission filter be replaced?
Lexus labels the system “sealed,” but many AU/NZ technicians recommend a filter and ATF service about every 100,000–120,000 km (or sooner under heavy use). Always use WS‑spec ATF and follow the correct level‑set procedure.
Can a home mechanic replace it?
It’s possible with stands, torque tools, a scan tool to monitor ATF temperature, and the correct fill/level procedure. If unsure, book it with a transmission specialist to avoid incorrect fluid level or leaks.
