2017 Lexus IS pedal pads — what they do and how to look after them
Based on the Lexus Repair Manual for the XE30-series IS and the Toyota/Lexus Electronic Parts Catalogue, the 2017 Lexus IS uses a dedicated rubber brake pedal pad from factory. The accelerator pedal is a moulded assembly without a separate removable pad, and Australian/NZ-market 2017 IS models are automatic, so there’s no clutch pad. Some trims may also have a small pad on a foot-operated parking brake pedal (where fitted). So yes—“pedal pads” are relevant to this vehicle, primarily for the serviceable brake pedal pad.
The brake pedal pad is a simple but critical bit of kit. It provides grippy, cushioned contact for the driver’s shoe, helping prevent slips in the wet and reducing foot fatigue in stop–start traffic. The pad also protects the metal pedal arm from wear. Over time, rubber hardens and smooths off, and can crack, glaze, or become contaminated by cleaners or oil—any of which can reduce traction. That’s why the factory literature treats the pad as a replace-on-condition item.
As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to inspect the pad for shiny smooth spots, hardened rubber, edge tears, or a loose fit on the pedal plate. If the surface has gone slick or the rubber is cracking, replacement is cheap insurance. Stick with a genuine-quality pad so the fit is snug and the compound is the right hardness. Swapping it is a quick job: with the engine off, pull the old pad off the pedal plate, clean the metal surface with mild detergent and water (no solvents), then warm the new pad slightly and work the lip over the plate until it’s fully seated all around. Give the pedal a firm press to confirm it doesn’t slip.
For day-to-day care, just wipe the pad with mild soapy water and a soft brush. Avoid silicon dressings or tyre shine—they can turn the surface slippery. If your IS happens to have a foot-operated parking brake, treat that pad the same way. Worn or slippery pedal pads can attract attention at WoF/RWC time, and more importantly, they’re a safety risk. Keep them grippy and they’ll quietly do their job for years.
Does a 2017 Lexus IS have a replaceable pedal pad?
Yes—the brake pedal uses a replaceable rubber pad. The accelerator is a one-piece assembly without a separate pad, and local 2017 IS models don’t include a clutch. Some variants with a foot-operated parking brake may also have a small pad on that pedal.
How often should the brake pedal pad be replaced?
There’s no fixed interval, it’s replaced on condition. Check it at every service. If the rubber is smooth, hard, cracked, or loose—or if shoes slip when wet—fit a new pad. In typical Aussie and Kiwi use, many pads last several years but environment and footwear make a big difference.
Can universal pedal covers be fitted to a 2017 IS?
Not recommended. Universal metal or dress-up covers can reduce grip or foul the pedal travel if they don’t fit perfectly, and may raise questions at WoF/RWC. Use the correct-spec Lexus brake pedal pad to keep the pedal safe, compliant, and comfortable.
