Maintaining and Replacing Tie Rod Ends on Your 2017 Ford Escape

The tie rod end is a crucial component of your 2017 Ford Escape's steering system. It's responsible for connecting the steering rack to the steering knuckle, ensuring the wheels turn when you move the steering wheel. While it might be small, it plays a significant role in your vehicle's steering performance and overall safety.

Over time, due to the knocks and bumps of daily driving, the tie rod end can wear out or become damaged. This wear can lead to a number of issues, such as a loose steering feel, uneven tire wear, and, in extreme cases, complete steering failure. It's important to regularly check and replace your tie rod ends as needed to maintain your vehicle in top condition.

  1. Signs Your Tie Rod Ends May Need Attention:
    • Uneven or excessive tyre wear.
    • Loose steering or a sense of wandering while driving.
    • A steering wheel that does not centre correctly after turning.
    • Strange noises when turning the steering wheel, such as clunking or rattling.
  2. Checking Your Tie Rod Ends:

To check the condition of your tie rod ends, you can perform a basic visual inspection or take it to a professional. Begin by jacking up the front of your vehicle and securing it on stands. With the engine off and the vehicle stationary, visually inspect the tie rod ends for signs of wear, such as cracking or corrosion.

With your hands, try moving the steering knuckles back and forth while watching the tie rod ends. If there is excessive play or movement, it's likely time for a replacement.

  3. Replacing the Tie Rod Ends:

If you've identified that the tie rod ends need replacing, here's what you or your mechanic would generally do:

    • Secure the vehicle on a level surface and lift the front wheels using a jack and stands.
    • Remove the front tyres to gain access to the tie rod ends.
    • Carefully unscrew the locknut that holds the tie rod end in place. Make sure to keep track of how many turns it takes to remove it completely, this helps maintain alignment.
    • Remove the cotter pin and castle nut that attach the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. A ball joint separator might be necessary to loosen the tie rod end.
    • Replace with the new tie rod end, in the reverse order of removal, ensuring the number of turns matches the removal count.
    • Tighten all nuts securely and make sure a new cotter pin is installed.

It is strongly recommended to have a wheel alignment performed immediately after replacing tie rod ends. Incorrect alignment due to improper installation can lead to additional tyre wear and impair your driving safety.

  4. Regular Maintenance Tips:
    • Regularly inspect and lubricate if necessary, most modern tie rod ends are sealed but checking the boot for damage is a good practice.
    • Whenever you have your tyres rotated or replaced, ask for the tie rod ends to be checked.
    • Don't ignore signs of steering issues, the sooner you address them, the easier - and usually cheaper - they are to fix.

While the tie rod end might be a small component, its role in your Ford Escape is invaluable. Keeping an eye on its condition and replacing it when necessary ensures not only a smooth drive but also keeps you safe on the roads. If you're ever unsure, it's always a good idea to consult with a professional mechanic to ensure everything is in top condition.
