2016 Toyota RAV4 Pedal Pads — Fitment, Purpose and Service Advice
Technical references including the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue for the 2016 RAV4 (XA40 series: ASA44/AVA44/ZSA42) and the Toyota RAV4 Repair Manual brake pedal section confirm the vehicle uses a replaceable rubber brake pedal pad (genuine Toyota example: 47121‑42020). Manual-transmission models also use a clutch pedal pad. The accelerator is an integrated electronic pedal assembly with a moulded tread surface and no separate pad. So, pedal pads are relevant on this model for the brake (and clutch where fitted), but not for the accelerator.
On a 2016 RAV4, the brake pedal pad’s job is dead simple but critical: it gives the driver a grippy, cushioned surface so the foot doesn’t slip, wet or dry. Over time the rubber hardens, smooths off, or cracks from daily use, UV exposure and the odd muddy boot. When that happens, pedal feel drops off and stop‑start driving can feel a bit sketchy. Keeping a fresh pad on the brake (and clutch if it’s a manual) is a quick, low‑cost safety win.
Servicing advice is straightforward. At each service or at least every 10,000–15,000 kilometres, have the pad checked for glazing, tears, looseness or missing corners. If the surface has gone shiny, the ribbing is worn flat, or the pad can be nudged sideways, it’s time to replace it. Many WOF (NZ) and roadworthy (AU) inspections expect a secure, intact pedal pad, so sorting it early avoids a fail.
Replacement is a DIY‑friendly five‑minute job. With the engine off, pull the old pad off the metal pedal plate, clean away grit so the new pad seats properly, then press the new pad on, working the lip over the edges until it’s fully home. There’s no grease or adhesive needed
