Understanding Struts on the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder

The 2016 Nissan Pathfinder uses a traditional suspension setup that does not include struts. Instead, it features a double wishbone front suspension and a multi-link rear suspension. This means struts, as you might see on many other vehicles, especially passenger cars with front MacPherson struts, are not part of this SUV's suspension design.

So why are struts not fitted on the 2016 Pathfinder? Well, the Pathfinder is designed as a midsize SUV built for a combination of on-road comfort and off-road capability. Vehicles like this typically benefit from more robust suspension components that can handle heavier loads and tougher terrain. The double wishbone front suspension provides better wheel control and articulation compared to struts, which can be limited in that regard. Similarly, the multi-link rear suspension helps maintain stability and ride comfort across varied road surfaces.

Struts combine the shock absorber and the coil spring into one unit, simplifying suspension design and reducing weight. This is why many sedans, hatchbacks, and smaller SUVs use struts at least in the front. However, while that setup is cost-effective and space-saving, it doesn't offer the same level of strength or ride tuning flexibility as a double wishbone or multi-link suspension. For the Pathfinder, Nissan has prioritised durability, load capacity, and off-road performance over the simplicity that struts bring.

Because the 2016 Pathfinder does not have struts, maintenance and replacement advice typically focuses on individual shock absorbers, springs, and the other suspension components that make up its setup. This includes keeping an eye on worn bushings, ball joints, and shocks to ensure the vehicle retains its smooth, safe handling characteristics. It is important to keep the suspension in good shape, as it directly impacts ride quality, safety, and even tyre wear.

So while struts are a key part of suspension systems on many cars, they are not relevant to the 2016 Nissan Pathfinder. Owners should instead focus on maintaining the actual shock absorbers and other suspension components specific to their vehicle's design. Regular inspections, especially after tough terrain or heavy use, will help keep the suspension running smoothly and reliably.
