Spark Plugs Replacement and Maintenance for Your 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer

The 2016 Mitsubishi Lancer relies on efficient spark plugs to ensure optimal engine performance. Over time, spark plugs can wear out and lead to issues such as reduced fuel efficiency or rough idling. To maintain your vehicle's peak performance, it's crucial to give some attention to your Lancer's spark plugs as part of regular servicing.

If you've noticed signs like trouble starting the engine, misfiring, or reduced acceleration, it might be time to check those spark plugs. The owner's manual should have guidance on the recommended interval for spark plug replacement, but typically it's every 30,000 to 50,000 kilometres, depending on the type of spark plugs installed. Copper plugs, for example, have a shorter lifespan compared to iridium-tipped ones, which might last longer but cost a bit more. Regardless of the type, ensuring they are in good condition is key to your engine's health.

  1. Firstly, ensure that you have the right tools for the job, including a spark plug socket, ratchet, and an extension bar. Having a spark plug gap tool is also a good idea in case you need to adjust the gap to the specifications indicated for your Lancer.
  2. Start by allowing your car's engine to cool down completely to prevent any burns. Once cooled, locate the spark plugs, which are usually found along the cylinder head. For ease of access, you may need to remove a few components depending on the engine configuration.
  3. Carefully disconnect the spark plug wires by holding the boot, not the wire, to avoid damage. Using the socket and ratchet, loosen and remove each spark plug. Check them for deposits or wear, which can indicate issues with combustion or the fuel system.
  4. Before installing new spark plugs, ensure they are correctly gapped. Insert them carefully and hand-tighten initially to avoid cross-threading. Use the ratchet for a snug fit, but be cautious not to overtighten as this can damage the cylinder head.
  5. Reconnect the spark plug wires securely, making sure they snap into place. It's also a good practice to apply a small amount of dielectric grease to the boots to prevent moisture build-up.

After replacing the spark plugs, take your Lancer for a short drive to ensure everything is functioning smoothly. Regularly checking and replacing your spark plugs when needed not only helps maintain engine performance but also contributes to better fuel economy and a smoother driving experience. Being proactive about such maintenance tasks will extend your vehicle's life and save on potential costly repairs down the road.
