2016 Mazda BT-50 Centre Bearing — purpose, service and replacement

Based on the Mazda BT-50 UP/UR Workshop Manual (2012–2018) driveline section and the Mazda Electronic Parts Catalogue for UP/UR series, the 2016 BT-50 is fitted with a propeller shaft centre support bearing on models that run a two-piece tailshaft (most Dual Cab and 4x4 variants). Equivalent Ford Ranger PX workshop documentation for the shared T6 platform also specifies a centre bearing for two-piece shafts. Some low-ride 4x2 Single Cab models use a one-piece tailshaft and therefore do not have a centre bearing. For most 2016 BT-50s on Aussie and Kiwi roads, the centre-bearing is a standard, serviceable item.

On two-piece shafts, the centre-bearing’s job is to support the tailshaft mid-span, keep driveline angles in check, and soak up vibration. It helps the ute put torque to the ground smoothly, reduces shudder on take-off, and cuts down on droning at highway speeds. It’s especially important for vehicles carrying loads, towing, or spending time on corrugations where the rubber isolator in the bearing bracket works hard to control movement.

Quality OE or reputable aftermarket bearings last well when alignment is right and the rubber isn’t constantly overloaded.
