2016 Ford Transit fuel cap: do you actually need one?

Short answer: no. The 2016 Ford Transit doesn’t use a traditional screw-on fuel cap. It’s fitted from factory with Ford’s capless Easy Fuel system. During routine servicing, it’s worth checking that the exterior fuel door opens and closes cleanly and that no dust, sand or leaves are sitting in the filler neck. If the internal flap doesn’t close fully, petrol models can throw an evap-related fault light after refuelling, and diesel models may refuse the nozzle or a jerry can spout.

• If refuelling from a jerry can, use the Ford-supplied white plastic funnel (usually in the vehicle’s tool kit or stowage). It depresses the safety flap correctly.
• If the dash shows a fuel filler inlet message or you notice a fuel smell, gently rinse the filler mouth with clean water and air-dry. Avoid oils or silicone sprays on the flap, they can attract dust and affect sealing.
• If the flap sticks, insert and remove the correct-size nozzle or the Ford funnel a couple of times to re-seat the mechanism.
• Replace the capless filler housing if the flap is damaged, won’t seal, or won’t accept the correct nozzle size. Your technician will reference the Transit’s capless filler module rather than a separate cap.
