Oil Filter Replacement and Maintenance for Your 2016 Ford Everest

The oil filter in your 2016 Ford Everest plays a crucial role in maintaining the health and performance of your vehicle's engine. It's often an overlooked component, yet it is essential for filtering out impurities and debris from the engine oil. To ensure your Everest runs smoothly, understanding the right procedures for oil filter replacement and maintenance is key.

Replacing your oil filter is a vital part of routine vehicle maintenance. Ford recommends that you change the oil and the oil filter at the same time, approximately every 10,000 to 15,000 kilometres, or every 12 months, whichever comes first. Regularly changing the oil filter ensures that the new oil remains clean and effective throughout its lifecycle, providing the best possible protection for your engine.

When it's time to replace the oil filter, here are some steps to guide you:

  1. Preparation: Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary tools and materials, including a new oil filter, fresh engine oil, a filter wrench, an oil pan, and some cloths for cleanup. Park your Everest on a level surface and ensure the engine is cool.
  2. Draining the Oil: Position the oil pan beneath the engine's drain plug. Remove the plug with a wrench and let the old oil fully drain out. Be careful, as the oil can still be slightly warm. Once drained, replace and securely tighten the drain plug.
  3. Removing the Old Oil Filter: Use an oil filter wrench to carefully unscrew the old oil filter. Be prepared for any residual oil that may spill out once the filter is removed. Clean the area where the filter was mounted.
  4. Installing the New Oil Filter: Take the new oil filter and apply a small amount of fresh oil to the rubber seal. This helps ensure a proper seal and makes it easier to remove the filter during future changes. Screw the new filter into place by hand until it's snug, then give it another three-quarters of a turn with the wrench.
  5. Refilling the Engine Oil: Pour the recommended type and amount of new engine oil into the engine. Check your owner's manual for specifics - usually around 7-9 litres. Use the dipstick to ensure the oil is at the correct level, topping up if necessary.
  6. Checking for Leaks: Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check under the vehicle for any signs of oil leaks, particularly around the filter area and the drain plug. If you spot any leaks, turn off the engine and address them accordingly. Once you've confirmed there are no leaks, turn off the engine and recheck the oil level. Top up if needed.
  7. Disposing of Old Oil and Filter: Proper disposal of used oil and filters is crucial for environmental reasons. Many automotive shops or service centres accept old oil and filters for recycling, so take them there rather than disposing of them with general waste.

Regular maintenance not only keeps your Everest running efficiently but also protects your investment in the long term. By routinely changing the oil filter, you're ensuring that your vehicle's engine remains free from contaminants that could cause wear and tear or potential damage over time. This approach also maximises fuel efficiency and prolongs engine life, saving you from costly repairs in the future.

It's advisable to keep a record of all maintenance and servicing activities. This record is useful not only for tracking when your next oil filter change is due but also adds to the resale value of your vehicle, as it clearly demonstrates attentive upkeep to prospective buyers. Furthermore, if you're unsure or uncomfortable performing maintenance tasks yourself, don't hesitate to seek professional assistance from a qualified mechanic or a Ford service centre.

By following these guidelines, you're ensuring that your 2016 Ford Everest continues to deliver optimal performance, providing reliability and peace of mind as you tackle your daily commutes or embark on long journeys.
