2015 Volvo XC60 fuel cap — purpose, care and when to replace
For the 2015 Volvo XC60, a conventional, threaded and tethered fuel filler cap is fitted and used. This is confirmed by Volvo’s 2015 XC60 Owner’s Manual (Refuelling section), which instructs drivers to remove and refit the filler cap and hang it on the holder inside the fuel flap, and by Volvo VIDA service diagnostics that list the fuel cap seal as a first check for EVAP leak faults (e.g., small leak/loose cap). A capless system is not used on this model year XC60.
On this Volvo, the fuel cap’s job is simple but crucial: it seals the tank to keep petrol or diesel vapours in, water and dust out, and the emissions system happy. The cap works with the EVAP system to control fuel vapour, if the seal isn’t tight, the car can detect a leak, illuminate the check engine light, and store an EVAP fault code. A good cap also helps prevent fuel smells around the vehicle and reduces the chance of contamination during wet or dusty driving common in Aussie and Kiwi conditions.
The cap is designed to be tightened until it clicks, providing the correct seal without over-torque. After refuelling, refit the cap and turn until you feel and hear that distinct click. The tether and holder on the inside of the flap help keep the cap clean while you’re filling up.
- Service tip: At each service or at least yearly, inspect the cap’s rubber seal for cracks, flattening or hardness, make sure the tether is intact and the cap clicks securely.
- Lightly wipe the sealing surface of the filler neck and the cap’s O-ring, a tiny smear of silicone-compatible grease on the O-ring can help longevity.
- Replace the cap if you notice persistent fuel odours, the cap won’t click tight, the seal is perished, or you’re chasing recurring EVAP small-leak warnings after refuelling.
- Choose a genuine Volvo cap or a quality equivalent that matches your fuel type (petrol or diesel) and the XC60’s year.
There’s no interior release: once the vehicle is unlocked, press the fuel flap to open, remove the cap, hang it on the flap hook, refuel, then tighten the cap until it clicks. Keeping this small part in good nick is a cheap way to avoid nuisance warnings and protect the emissions system over the long run.
Where is the fuel-cap release on a 2015 Volvo XC60?
There’s no lever inside the cabin. Unlock the vehicle with the remote or door button, then press on the fuel flap to pop it open. The cap is inside the flap, tethered and ready to unscrew.
Why does the check engine light appear after refuelling?
A loose or worn fuel cap is a common cause of EVAP small-leak faults after a fill. Make sure the cap is tightened until it clicks. If the light persists, inspect the cap’s seal and consider replacing the cap before digging deeper into the EVAP system.
Are petrol and diesel fuel caps interchangeable on the XC60?
They look similar, but always match the cap to the fuel type and model year. Using the correct spec cap ensures the right seal and venting behaviour and keeps the EVAP system operating as intended.
