2015 Ford Transit MAP sensor: purpose, care and when to replace

Based on Ford technical literature, the 2015 Ford Transit does use a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor across its petrol and diesel engines. The Ford Workshop Manual (2015 Transit, Section 303-14: Electronic Engine Controls) lists the MAP sensor and related diagnostics (DTCs P0106, P0107, P0108). Ford wiring diagrams for the 2015 Transit show a dedicated MAP circuit to the PCM, and genuine parts catalogues specify “Sensor – Manifold Absolute Pressure/Boost” for the 2.2 TDCi and 3.7L/3.5L engines (common OE references include BK2Q-9F479-AB and similar supersessions). So, it’s absolutely a relevant and fitted component on this model.

The MAP sensor’s job is to tell the Transit’s PCM exactly how much pressure (vacuum or boost) is in the intake manifold. On the diesel Transits, it’s critical for controlling boost, fuelling and EGR so the van pulls strongly without over-fuelling or soot. On the petrol V6s, it helps the PCM line up spark timing and fuel delivery with engine load. Many variants use a combined temperature-and-pressure unit (T-MAP), which sharpens calculations and trims.

While the sensor itself isn’t a typical “wear item”, it lives a hard life. Diesel engines can leave a fine film of oil and soot on the sensing port, turbo petrols can mist oil into the intake. Owners who do lots of short trips or dusty kilometres in AU/NZ conditions benefit from periodic inspection. A light clean with electronics-safe or MAF-safe cleaner can restore crisp readings—no poking with wire, and no harsh solvents. If the sensor uses an O-ring, replace it if flattened or hard.

Common giveaway signs of a crook MAP sensor include lazy throttle response, black smoke on a diesel, rough idle, poor economy, limp-home behaviour, and the check engine light with codes like P0106–P0108. A quick scan should show about ambient pressure (around 100 kPa) with key-on/engine-off, lower kPa at idle on petrol engines, and higher kPa under turbo boost.

Replacement is straightforward: unplug, remove the fixing screw, lift the sensor, fit a new O-ring, refit and snug the screw (small fasteners—don’t overdo it), then clear codes. The PCM will relearn trims after a short mixed drive. Reputable OE-quality sensors are worth it, cheapies can cause odd drivability gremlins.

  • Inspect/clean every 20,000–30,000 km, especially on diesels.
  • Check connectors for oil ingress and damaged pins.
  • If in doubt, verify readings with a scan tool against barometric pressure.
