- Maintain correct coolant type/strength and bleed air after cooling system work—air pockets can fool the ECT.

Common clues a temp sensor or its wiring is playing up include hard cold starts, high idle, rich running, fans roaring at odd times, erratic dash gauge, sluggish shifts on autos, frequent DPF regens, or fault codes like P0115–P0119, P0125/P0128 (ECT) or EGT-related codes. A quick data check usually narrows it down.
Replacing an ECT is straightforward: drain a little coolant, unplug, swap the sensor and seal, refill and bleed, then clear codes and confirm stable temps on a test drive. EGT sensors can seize in the exhaust—penetrating fluid, correct sockets and patience help. For TFT issues, the sensor is part of the transmission’s valve body/leadframe, so that’s a workshop job. Wherever possible, fit OEM-quality sensors and follow torque specs to avoid leaks or thread damage.
Where is the engine coolant temperature sensor on a 2015 Ranger?
On the 2.2L and 3.2L Duratorq diesels, the ECT sensor is mounted near the thermostat housing at the engine’s coolant outlet on the cylinder head. It’s accessible from the top with the engine cover off, follow the upper radiator hose back to the housing to spot the small, two‑pin sensor.
