2015 Daihatsu Bego temperature-sensors: what they do and how to look after them
Temperature-sensors are absolutely fitted to the 2015 Daihatsu Bego (J200 series, 3SZ‑VE 1.5‑litre). These sensors do the quiet heavy lifting. The ECT tells the ECU how warm the engine is so it can sort cold‑start fuelling, ignition timing, idle speed and radiator fan operation. The IAT helps the ECU gauge incoming air density for cleaner combustion and better economy. The ATF temperature input shapes shift timing and line pressure on automatic models. HVAC sensors (ambient and evaporator) keep the cabin comfortable and stop the evaporator icing up. Without accurate temperature data, the Bego can run rich, idle poorly, overheat, shift harshly, or cut the A/C at the wrong time.
They aren’t a scheduled replacement item, but they deserve attention during regular servicing. Sensible checks include:
- Scan ECT and IAT live data stone‑cold and fully hot, values should track ambient on cold start and reach stable operating temps after a drive.
- Inspect connectors and earths near the thermostat housing and air intake for corrosion, oil wicking or broken tabs.
- Maintain correct coolant concentration and change intervals, old coolant can leave scale on the sensor tip and skew readings.
- When bleeding the cooling system, purge air properly so the ECT sees coolant, not bubbles.
If replacement is needed, go for OEM‑quality (Denso‑spec) parts. Work on a cold engine, capture and reuse or replace coolant as required, fit a new sealing washer/O‑ring, and avoid thread tape. Tighten to workshop‑manual spec, reconnect, then clear any DTCs and verify fan cycling and temperature stability on a road test. ATF temperature sensors are typically internal to the transmission, unless fault‑coded, focus on correct ATF spec and level, filter condition and cooler cleanliness rather than proactive sensor replacement.
Common clues a temperature-sensor is playing up include hard cold starts, rich fuel smell, poor fuel economy, radiator fans running constantly or not at all, sudden A/C cut‑out, and OBD‑II faults like P0115–P0119 (ECT circuit) or P0125/P0128 (insufficient warm‑up/thermostat performance).
How often should the Bego’s coolant temperature sensor be replaced?
There’s no fixed kilometre interval, it’s condition‑based. If live data tracks correctly and there are no related DTCs or drivability symptoms, it can run for years. Many workshops check ECT performance whenever coolant is replaced or a thermostat job is done, because that’s when access is easiest and sealing washers can be renewed.
Replacement is sensible when there’s erratic data, confirmed out‑of‑spec resistance, visible connector damage, or persistent ECT‑related fault codes after basic wiring and coolant system checks.
What are the tell‑tale signs of a failing temperature-sensor on a 2015 Bego?
Owners often notice rough cold starts, higher than normal fuel use, black exhaust soot, radiator fans running at odd times, or the gauge behaving strangely. The A/C may cycle off early if the evaporator sensor is reading wrong. A scan tool will usually show implausible ECT/IAT temperatures or throw codes like P0117/P0118.
Before replacing parts, a quick inspection of connectors, grounds, coolant level and thermostat operation is worthwhile, as these can mimic sensor faults.
Is the IAT separate from the MAF on the Bego?
On many 3SZ‑VE setups used in the Bego/Rush, the IAT is integrated within the Denso airflow meter on the intake tract. Some markets and trims may use a separate IAT near the airbox. The easiest way to confirm is a visual check during service or by consulting the J200 wiring diagram in the service manual.
Regardless of layout, keeping the intake tract clean and the air filter fresh helps the IAT read accurately and keeps fuelling trims tidy.
