2014 Toyota LandCruiser universal joints — what they do and how to look after them

Per Toyota’s technical literature — the LandCruiser 200 Series Repair Manual (Propeller Shaft section, 2012–2015 coverage), Toyota New Car Features (J200 driveline), and Toyota Australia/NZ service schedules that include “Lubricate propeller shaft” — the 2014 LandCruiser runs cross‑type universal joints (U‑joints) on the front and rear propeller shafts. Many variants use a double‑cardan (twin U‑joint) at one end of the front shaft. So universal joints absolutely apply to this model.

On a 2014 LandCruiser, the universal joints let the prop shafts send torque from the transfer case to the diffs while the suspension moves and the angles change. They’re compact, tough, and perfectly suited to a heavy 4x4 that tows, tours and sees corrugations, creek crossings and sand. When they’re happy, there’s smooth take‑up and no driveline shudder, when they’re not, there’ll be clunks, vibes and accelerated wear elsewhere.

Servicing is straightforward and pays off big time. Where fitted with grease nipples, the spider bearings get a quality NLGI #2 chassis grease and the slip joint (spline) takes a suitable moly grease as per Toyota specs. Greasing until clean lube purges past each seal helps push out moisture and grit. Toyota’s workshop procedures call for regular inspection of the joints for free movement, even purge, intact seals and no rust bleed from the caps. In Aussie and Kiwi conditions, especially with mud or water crossings, greasing every service (or even mid‑service for hard use) is smart.

If replacement is due, keeping the phasing (alignment) of the yokes is critical to avoid vibration. Mark the flanges and yokes before removal, support the shaft to prevent damage, and use proper circlip pliers and a press or a suitable driver to seat caps squarely. After refit, torque the flange bolts to the Toyota spec and recheck for smooth articulation. Many owners choose genuine or OE‑equivalent joints for correct cup size, seal design and hardness — cheap joints can be false economy on a heavy wagon.

  • Watch for tell‑tales: a metallic clunk on take‑off or shift, vibration at highway speeds, chirping that changes with road speed, dry or rust‑stained caps, or tight spots when the shaft is flexed by hand.
  • If a joint is sealed (no nipples), it’s “lubed for life”, once it develops play, it’s replacement time.
  • After deep water or bulldust, a quick clean and re‑grease goes a long way.

Popular questions

How often should the U‑joints be greased on a 2014 LandCruiser 200?

For variants with greaseable joints, many workshops in Australia and New Zealand grease them at every service interval. With frequent towing, corrugations or water crossings, shorter intervals are wise. Sealed joints don’t get greased, they’re inspected and replaced if worn.

Toyota’s workshop guidance also includes checking for smooth movement and seal condition at each service. Off‑road use or beach work calls for more frequent attention.

What are common symptoms of worn U‑joints on a 2014 LandCruiser?

Classic signs include a clunk on take‑up, vibration between about 60–100 km/h, squeaks that change with speed, rust staining around the bearing caps and noticeable play or tight spots when the shaft is flexed by hand.

Catch them early and the fix is typically just the joint itself, leave it too long and companion flanges, slip joints or the centre bearing can cop it too.

Are the U‑joints on a 2014 LandCruiser serviceable or sealed?

Both exist across trims and markets. Many Aussie/NZ 200 Series shafts have grease nipples on the spiders and slip joints, while some variants run sealed “lubed‑for‑life” spiders. A quick look for zerk fittings on the joint will tell the story.

Either way, regular inspection is part of proper servicing, and replacement joints should match the original style and specification.
