Universal Joints on the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder: What You Need to Know

When looking into the drivetrain components of the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder, one question that often arises is whether universal joints (U-joints) are part of the setup. After consulting multiple technical sources and service manuals for this specific model, it turns out that traditional universal joints are not fitted to the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder. This can seem a bit surprising given the widespread use of U-joints in many vehicles, especially those with four-wheel drive systems, but there are clear reasons behind this design choice.

Instead of universal joints, the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder utilises constant velocity (CV) joints on its driveshafts. These CV joints play a similar role to U-joints but are more suited to the vehicle's front-wheel drive based platform and its smooth driving requirements. The Pathfinder's drivetrain architecture borrows heavily from the Nissan Murano, emphasising efficiency and comfort over rugged off-roading. Because CV joints can maintain a constant rotational speed across a range of angles, they are ideal for this kind of vehicle configuration.

So why are universal joints not used? Typically, universal joints are robust and can handle extreme angles, which makes them a favourite in older four-wheel drive or rear-wheel drive vehicles with solid axles and heavy-duty off-road demands. However, on vehicles like the 2014 Pathfinder, which is built for family driving with occasional light off-roading or all-weather traction, the CV joints provide smoother operation and less vibration at a wider range of angles. This also aids in reducing drivetrain noise and improving overall ride quality.

Because the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder is equipped with CV joints rather than universal joints, when it comes to servicing and maintenance, the focus naturally shifts towards these CV joints. Maintenance for CV joints can include regular inspection of the protective rubber boots that cover them. These boots prevent dirt, water and debris from damaging the joint and keep the necessary grease inside. If the boots crack or tear, it can quickly lead to joint failure, which is a lot more costly than simply replacing a boot.

That said, if any repairs are needed in the drivetrain or driveshaft areas of the 2014 Pathfinder, it is always a good idea to have a qualified mechanic check the entire system for wear and tear. Even though universal joints aren't part of the mix, parts like CV joints, centre support bearings (if fitted), and related shaft components are critical to keeping things running smoothly.

In essence, anyone researching universal joints on the 2014 Nissan Pathfinder should know that U-joints are not part of this vehicle's drivetrain setup. Instead, the vehicle benefits from CV joints which offer excellent performance for the kind of driving the Pathfinder is designed for. If you want your Pathfinder to stay in good shape, paying attention to the condition of CV joint boots and having regular inspections done as part of scheduled servicing will make a big difference in avoiding bigger issues down the road.
