2014 Ford Kuga radiator-cap: what’s actually fitted
Based on technical sources – the 2014 Ford Kuga Owner’s Manual (Cooling section) and the Ford Workshop Manual for Kuga/Escape 2013–2016 (Section 303-03, Engine Cooling) – this model does not have a traditional radiator cap on the radiator. Instead, it uses a sealed, pressurised cooling system with a remote degas/expansion bottle. The pressure cap lives on that bottle, not on the radiator. Ford parts literature and Motorcraft service references also call it a “degas bottle pressure cap”, which is why a separate radiator-cap isn’t relevant for this vehicle.
Why did Ford do it this way? Modern cooling systems are designed so the highest point under the bonnet is the expansion tank, not the radiator neck. That lets the system continuously purge air, keeps coolant volume stable as it heats and cools, and improves packaging under a low bonnet line. It also reduces scald risk and makes level checks simple – top up at the bottle, not at the radiator.
- No neck on the radiator: the radiator is sealed, all filling and pressure control happens at the expansion tank.
- Pressure and deaeration: the tank’s cap holds pressure (typically around 140 kPa / 20 psi – check the stamping on the cap fitted to the vehicle), lifting the boiling point and bleeding air back to the tank.
- Service simplicity: technicians check and top up at one point only, improving reliability and reducing mess.
Even though there’s no radiator-cap, the expansion tank cap does the same critical job. It should be inspected at each service for perished seals, damaged threads, sticky valves, or signs of misting/hissing. Common symptoms of a tired cap include unexplained coolant loss, a sweet coolant smell after driving, overflow at the bottle, gurgling in the heater, or hoses collapsing as the engine cools (vacuum valve issue).
- Only open the cap when the engine is stone cold.
- Wipe the neck clean, check the O-ring and replace the cap if the seal is cracked or flattened.
- Pressure-test the cap with an adapter to its rated pressure if faults are suspected.
- Use the coolant type specified in the Owner’s Manual and keep the level between the MIN and MAX marks.
- As a rule of thumb, replace the cap at the first sign of trouble or preventatively every few years/major services.
