Understanding Universal Joints in the 2014 Daihatsu Bego

The 2014 Daihatsu Bego, a compact SUV mainly marketed in select Asian markets, shares many drivetrain characteristics with similar small SUVs of its era. When discussing universal joints, or U-joints, it's important to clarify their relevance to this particular vehicle. Simply put, the 2014 Daihatsu Bego does not typically use universal joints in its drivetrain setup.

Why is this the case? Universal joints are most commonly found in vehicles with a body-on-frame chassis and a two-piece driveshaft, such as traditional rear-wheel-drive or four-wheel-drive trucks and SUVs. They allow the driveshaft to flex and accommodate the movement between the transmission and the rear differential while maintaining rotational power. The Daihatsu Bego, however, is primarily a front-wheel-drive vehicle with an independent front suspension, and many variants are also equipped with a front-engine, front-wheel-drive system.

Because the Bego uses a transaxle layout - where the transmission and differential are housed in a single unit at the front of the vehicle - the need for universal joints is eliminated. Instead of a long driveshaft with one or more U-joints, the Bego utilises constant velocity joints, or CV joints, which perform the job of transmitting power while allowing for smooth, flexible wheel movement. CV joints are essential in front-wheel-drive vehicles because they can handle the up and down motion of the suspension and the steering input simultaneously, something universal joints aren't designed for.

This design choice favours simplicity, efficiency, and compactness. With everything neatly contained in the front drivetrain assembly, the 2014 Daihatsu Bego avoids the complexity, added weight, and maintenance concerns that come with universal joints. CV joints do require their own maintenance and attention, but universal joints are not part of this vehicle's drivetrain equation.

For many drivers and mechanics unfamiliar with behind-the-scenes drivetrain designs, it's easy to assume all vehicles with four-wheel configurations might use universal joints. However, this is usually limited to trucks and SUVs designed for robust off-road or towing capabilities, especially those with solid rear axles and driveshafts. The Bego's platform focuses on urban utility, efficiency, and compact dimensions, which don't call for universal joints.

So if you're servicing or restoring a 2014 Daihatsu Bego, it's worth focusing on the CV joints and related components rather than looking for universal joints. Regular inspections of the CV boots for cracks or tears, listening for clicking noises during turns, and monitoring for grease leaks are the way to keep your Bego's drivetrain healthy.

All in all, while universal joints are vital for many vehicles involving larger, segmented driveshafts, the 2014 Daihatsu Bego's design does not incorporate them. This design results in fewer mechanical linkages to monitor, less maintenance hassle, and a drivetrain well-suited to the Bego's intended style of driving and road conditions.
