2013 Ford Transit knock sensor: is it even a thing?
For the 2013 Ford Transit sold across Australia and New Zealand, the answer’s straightforward: the common 2.2‑litre Duratorq TDCi diesel variants aren’t fitted with a knock sensor, so a “2013 Ford Transit knock sensor” isn’t a relevant service item. This isn’t a missing part – it’s simply not part of the diesel engine management on these models.
That call lines up with factory and trade documentation. Ford eTIS/Workshop Manual listings for 2006.5–2013 Transit diesel engines show no knock sensor in the engine controls section, wiring diagrams for the PCM inputs/outputs don’t include a KS circuit. Autodata’s technical data for Transit V347/V348 2.2 TDCi lists CKP, CMP, MAP/boost, MAF, IAT, ECT, fuel rail pressure, EGR and exhaust sensors, but no knock sensor. Haynes Ford Transit Diesel 2000–2014 likewise omits a KS from engine loom diagrams. Bosch EDC16/EDC17 system overviews used with the Duratorq TDCi describe combustion control via pilot/main/post injections, again without a knock sensor.
Why no knock sensor on these diesels? Knock sensors are mostly a petrol-engine thing, letting the ECU trim spark timing to prevent pinging. The 2.2 TDCi is compression‑ignition with no spark, and its combustion “noise” is managed by shaping injection events and rail pressure. The ECU relies on crank/cam position, boost/MAP, MAF, temperature, and fuel system sensors to keep combustion clean and quiet without listening for knock. On a big, inherently noisy diesel block, a traditional piezo knock sensor would be swamped by normal diesel clatter anyway.
Chasing a “knock” on a 2013 Transit diesel? It’s smarter to look here:
- Fuel quality, injector performance and learned corrections
- Boost leaks, MAP/MAF accuracy, EGR sticking
- DPF load and regeneration status
- Engine mounts, front-end accessories, and dual-mass flywheel noises
Worth noting: a few petrol Transits in other markets used a Duratec petrol with a knock sensor. If a 2013 vehicle is a petrol outlier, a block-mounted KS may apply. For AU/NZ-delivered 2.2 TDCi vans, though, there’s no knock sensor to replace or service.
