2013 Ford Falcon harmonic balancer: what it does and how to look after it
Harmonic balancers are absolutely fitted and relevant on the 2013 Ford Falcon across its common engines — the 4.0L Barra inline-six (petrol and EcoLPi), the 2.0L EcoBoost four, and FPV variants — as documented in the Ford FG MkII Falcon Workshop Manual (engine sections 303-01/303-04) and supported by Ford parts catalogues (Microcat) and major aftermarket listings from brands like Dayco, Gates and PowerBond that specify crankshaft vibration dampers for BA–FG series Falcons. On this Falcon, the harmonic balancer (also called a crankshaft damper) is a two-piece pulley with a bonded elastomer ring. Its job is to cancel out torsional vibration from the crank, protect the bottom end, and keep the accessory drive smooth. Without a healthy balancer, the engine can buzz, belts can wander, and key components — from the oil pump to the front main seal — can cop unnecessary stress.
There isn’t a fixed replacement interval in the factory schedule, it’s a replace-on-condition item. As part of regular servicing, a quick visual and functional check goes a long way:
- Look for perished, cracked or bulging rubber between the hub and outer ring.
- Watch the pulley at idle — any wobble or run-out is a red flag.

If any of those show up, it’s time to replace. On the Barra and EcoBoost engines, replacement needs the correct puller, alignment care, and a new crank bolt. Torque and angle settings are engine-specific, so the workshop should follow the Ford WSM procedure and use fresh threadlocker where specified. It’s smart to fit a quality OEM-equivalent or performance-rated damper (especially on turbo models or tuned Falcons), inspect the serpentine belt and tensioner while you’re there, and reset belt routing correctly.
Left too long, a failing balancer can shear its rubber, throw the belt, overheat the engine, or in worst cases damage the crank. A quick check every service — particularly after 150,000 km or on vehicles doing lots of heat cycles — helps the Falcon stay smooth, quiet and happy on Aussie and Kiwi roads.
