2012 Volkswagen Amarok knock sensor — is it actually there?

Short answer: on 2012 Amarok models sold in Australia and New Zealand with the 2.0 TDI common-rail diesel, there isn’t a knock sensor fitted or used. Volkswagen’s own technical literature for the Amarok’s 2.0 TDI (engine codes such as CFCA) shows no knock-sensor circuit in the wiring, and no knock-sensor part in the factory catalogues. The control strategy relies on fuel pressure, multiple pilot/main injection events, boost and temperature feedback — not spark timing — so a knock sensor isn’t part of the system.

Why it’s not used: a knock sensor is a must-have on petrol engines to detect detonation and let the ECU pull ignition timing. A diesel like the 2012 Amarok auto-ignites fuel by high compression, so traditional “spark knock” isn’t a thing. What you might hear as “diesel knock” is normal combustion clatter managed by injection timing and pressure. The Amarok’s ECU uses inputs from the crank and cam sensors, fuel-rail pressure, air mass/boost, temperature sensors and the No. 3 injector needle-lift signal to control combustion — no acoustic knock sensing required.

Servicing tip: if a parts site lists a knock sensor for a 2012 Amarok TDI, that’s not applicable to AU/NZ diesel models. If a scan tool shows a P0325/P0330-type knock-sensor code, it’s usually a generic code set under the wrong vehicle profile. Re-scan with the correct VIN/engine code. For rattly running or ping-like noises, focus diagnosis on fuel quality, injector balance, pilot injection adaptation, EGR deposits, boost leaks, engine mounts or a worn dual-mass flywheel. None of these involve a knock sensor.

Note: some markets offered a petrol Amarok (2.0 TSI) which does use knock sensors, but that variant wasn’t the common 2012 AU/NZ spec.
