2012 Toyota Mark X Driveshafts
Based on Toyota’s GRX130/135 workshop manual and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC), the 2012 Toyota Mark X is equipped with driveshafts. Rear-wheel-drive grades use a propeller shaft (propshaft) from the transmission to the rear differential plus left/right rear driveshafts (half-shafts). All-wheel-drive “Four” variants add front driveshafts as well. So, driveshafts are very much relevant to this model.
On the Mark X, the driveshafts do the hard yakka of getting torque to the wheels. The propshaft links the gearbox to the rear diff, while the half-shafts send power from the diff to each wheel via constant velocity (CV) joints. CV joints and universal joints (U-joints) allow smooth rotation through suspension travel and steering angles (front on AWD), and a centre bearing on the propshaft helps keep things stable at speed. When everything’s healthy, the result is quiet, fuss-free drive with minimal vibration.
As part of regular servicing, it’s wise to inspect the driveshaft system every 10,000–15,000 km or at each scheduled service. Key checks include:
- CV boots for splits, grease fling or perishing
- U-joints and the propshaft centre bearing for play or roughness
- Propshaft flex disc/couplings and flange bolts for condition and torque
- Leaking diff or trans seals that can contaminate rubber components
Typical warning signs include a shudder on take-off, vibration at certain speeds, a clunk on gear changes, or clicking on turns (especially AWD front). Small issues turn big quickly: a torn boot lets grit in and grease out, which can wreck a CV joint. Catching a boot early often means a simple boot-and-grease job rather than a full shaft replacement.
When replacing, mark flange positions so the propshaft goes back in phase, use new flange bolts where specified, and have the shaft rebalanced if it’s been damaged or the centre bearing is changed. Quality parts matter—genuine or reputable aftermarket—and torque everything to spec from the Toyota repair manual. A wheel alignment isn’t usually required for rear half-shaft or propshaft work, but if suspension arms have been disturbed, get one done. For AWD models, replace boots and shafts in pairs where practical to keep wear even.
