2012 Toyota Hilux temperature sensors — what they do and how to look after them

Temperature sensors are absolutely fitted to the 2012 Toyota Hilux. This is clear in Toyota’s Electrical Wiring Diagram (EWD) for Hilux AN10/AN20, the official Toyota Repair Manual for 2012 models, and the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalogue (EPC). Toyota Techstream data lists common PIDs such as THW (engine coolant temperature), IAT (intake air temperature), A/T oil temp, and ambient temp, confirming their use across petrol and diesel variants.

On a 2012 Hilux, temperature sensors do a lot of quiet heavy lifting. The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor tells the ECU how hot the engine is so it can sort cold starts, idle speed, fuel delivery, ignition timing, and kick on the radiator fans when needed. The intake air temperature (IAT) sensor—often built into the MAF on petrols and some diesels, or combined with the MAP on others—helps trim fuelling and boost for crisp throttle response and better economy. There’s usually an ambient temperature sensor for the climate control and outside temp display, and autos use transmission fluid temperature sensing to refine shift quality and protect the gearbox. Some diesel variants and markets also add extra temp monitoring around the EGR or intake tract, exact sensor count depends on engine and spec.

There’s no set replacement interval for these sensors, they’re “replace on fault” items. As part of routine servicing, it pays to:

  • Scan live data (Techstream or a good OBD-II tool) and check that coolant temp, IAT, and—if auto—A/T temp rise and track logically from cold through a test drive.
  • Inspect plugs and wiring for corrosion, oil wicking, or rub-through—Hiluxes do work for a living, and road grime or salt can creep in.
  • Keep the air filter and MAF/IAT clean, use proper MAF-safe cleaner only (never touch the sensor wire with tools).
  • Maintain the cooling system—fresh coolant to Toyota spec, no leaks, and a healthy thermostat—so the ECT sees accurate conditions.

Typical fault clues include hard cold starts, rich running, high idle, lazy fan operation, poor fuel economy, or codes like P0115–P0119 (ECT/IAT range and performance). If the ECT needs replacing, allow the engine to cool, relieve pressure, swap the sensor with a quality OEM or reputable aftermarket part, and bleed the cooling system carefully to avoid air pockets. For auto models, the transmission temp sensor may be internal to the valve body, diagnosis first, and if needed, plan a pan-off job with new fluid and seal. Quality parts and correct coolant/ATF are key. A little preventative attention here saves headaches and keeps a Hilux happy over big kilometres.

  • Where is the engine coolant temperature sensor on a 2012 Hilux?

On most 2012 Hilux engines, the ECT sensor threads into the cylinder head or near the thermostat housing. Petrol 2TR‑FE and 1GR‑FE typically place it near the outlet neck, 1KD‑FTV diesels often position it on the head close to the coolant passage.

Best bet: confirm by VIN in the Toyota EPC, then verify location in the Repair Manual/EWD. A scan tool will show the THW value changing as the engine warms, confirming you’re on the right plug.

  • What are the symptoms of a bad temp sensor on a 2012 Hilux?

Expect hard cold starts, rich running, rough idle, poor economy, fans stuck on or late to come on, erratic temp gauge, and DTCs like P0115–P0119. Autos may shift harshly if the transmission temp signal is off.

Always check wiring/connectors and cooling system health first, a flaky ground or airlock can mimic a failed sensor.

  • Is the IAT separate from the MAF on a 2012 Hilux?

Often it’s built into the MAF on petrols and some diesels, other diesel variants use a combo MAP/IAT on the intake manifold. The exact setup depends on engine and market spec.

If servicing, clean the MAF/IAT with a proper MAF cleaner only, keep the airbox sealed, and recheck IAT readings on a scan tool—cold start IAT should be close to ambient.
