2012 Subaru XV ignition coils: what they do and how to look after them

Per Subaru’s factory service information for the GP-series 2012 XV/Impreza (FB engine section, ignition diagnostics) and the Subaru parts catalogue, the 2012 Subaru XV 2.0i petrol (FB20) uses a coil-on-plug ignition system with four individual ignition coils, one per cylinder. These are Denso/Hitachi-type units. Note: the EE20 turbo-diesel XV variant does not use ignition coils because diesel engines ignite fuel by compression rather than spark.

On the petrol XV, the ignition coils are the little transformers that live right on top of each spark plug under the bonnet. Their job is to take the 12-volt supply and step it up to the high voltage needed to jump the spark plug gap, lighting off the air–fuel mix cleanly and reliably. Coil-on-plug keeps the spark strong, trims electrical losses, and cuts out old-school leads, which is great for efficiency and day-to-day reliability.
