However, the Legacy 3.6R (and certain turbo variants in other markets) retain a traditional hydraulic system with a belt-driven power-steering pump.

Why no pump on many 2.5i cars? EPS replaces the hydraulic circuit with an electric motor on the steering rack. That cuts weight, removes the parasitic drag of a pump, and does away with fluid leaks and pump whine.
