2012 Ford Ranger knock sensor — fitted or not?
For Australia and New Zealand–spec 2012 Ford Ranger models (PX Mk1), a conventional knock sensor is not used on the common 2.2‑litre and 3.2‑litre Duratorq TDCi diesel engines. This isn’t guesswork: the factory Ford Workshop Manual (WSM) for PX Ranger 2011–2014, the Ford Electrical Wiring Diagram (EWD) for the same platform, and the Ford parts catalogue (Microcat) for AU/NZ list the full engine management sensor suite and harness routing without any knock sensor (no KS circuit, connector or part number). Those technical sources make it clear the diesel Rangers here don’t have a knock sensor circuit to diagnose or replace.
Why no knock sensor? The diesel combustion process is fundamentally different to a petrol engine. There’s no spark timing to pull back because fuel self‑ignites under very high compression. Instead of guarding against spark knock, the powertrain control module manages combustion quality with injection timing (including pilot injections), rail pressure, boost and EGR. The system uses other sensors to keep combustion stable and emissions in check, such as crank and cam position (CKP/CMP), fuel rail pressure, MAP and IAT, plus DPF differential pressure and exhaust temperature sensors. Because classic detonation isn’t the issue in a diesel, a dedicated knock sensor isn’t required on these engines.
Owners chasing a “knock” noise on a 2012 Ranger are usually hearing normal diesel clatter (more noticeable when cold), or a separate concern such as injector balance issues, poor fuel quality, a clogged fuel filter, intake leaks, worn engine mounts, or front‑end accessory noise. A proper scan with a Ford‑capable tool, injector correction checks, and a look at rail pressure and boost targets will get better results than hunting for a non‑existent knock sensor. If a generic scan tool shows P0325‑type knock sensor faults on a 2012 diesel Ranger, that’s just a generic menu item — it’s not applicable to AU/NZ diesel variants.
