2011 Subaru Exiga transmission fluid — what it does and when to change it

Transmission fluid absolutely applies to the 2011 Subaru Exiga. Depending on the variant, it runs either Subaru Genuine Lineartronic CVTF (for CVT models) or Subaru ATF-HP (for 5EAT autos used in the 2.0GT turbo). This is straight out of Subaru technical literature: the 2011 Exiga owner’s handbook and the Subaru Service Manual (YA-series, Automatic Transmission and CVT sections) specify those fluids and the related service checks. Subaru’s workshop procedures also call up the Subaru Select Monitor for CVT fluid temperature and level checks, reinforcing that fluid is vital to operation.

What does the fluid actually do? Heaps. It’s the lifeblood of the gearbox, handling lubrication, cooling and—critically—hydraulic control. In the 5EAT it enables smooth shifts and clutch engagement, in the Lineartronic CVT it also transfers torque through the pulleys and chain while controlling friction so you don’t get shudder.

  • Lubricates bearings, clutches and gears to cut wear.
  • Cools internal parts during Aussie and Kiwi summer heat or towing.
  • Provides hydraulic pressure for shifts and ratio changes.
  • Protects against corrosion, foaming and varnish build-up.

For servicing, the golden rule is use only the correct Subaru fluid—no “universal” ATF or CVT substitutes. Mixing types can cause shudder, flare or premature wear. If it’s a turbo 2.0GT with the 5EAT, ask for Subaru ATF-HP. If it’s a CVT, ask for Subaru Genuine Lineartronic CVTF (as specified for the Exiga’s year, dealers may supply a superseded CVTF part that’s backward-compatible).

  • Inspection interval: many workshops in AU/NZ check condition at 60,000 km. Under heavy use (towing, steep terrain, hot climate, lots of stop–start) a drain-and-fill around 40,000–60,000 km is sensible.
  • Typical replacement: 90,000–100,000 km for CVT and 5EAT is common practice, even though Subaru often lists “inspect” under normal driving. Go by condition: healthy fluid is clean and not burnt.
  • Procedure notes: CVT level is set at a specific fluid temperature using a scan tool (SSM) and a level plug—there’s no dipstick. The 5EAT usually has a dipstick but still benefits from a measured drain-and-fill. Pan and magnets should be cleaned, replace external filters where fitted.
  • Capacities vary by variant and service method: a single drain typically returns about 4–6 litres, full system capacity is higher.

Not sure which box you’ve got? Many 2.0 NA cars use the CVT, the 2.0GT turbo is 5EAT. The ID plate and shift pattern help confirm. When in doubt, quote the VIN to a Subaru parts counter.

  • What transmission fluid does a 2011 Subaru Exiga take?
It depends on the gearbox. CVT models use Subaru Genuine Lineartronic CVTF. The 2.0GT turbo with the 5EAT uses Subaru ATF-HP. Don’t substitute with generic ATF/CVTF. Always confirm via the VIN with a Subaru parts catalogue, because Subaru may supply a superseded CVTF that’s correct for your build.
  • How often should the transmission fluid be changed?
Many AU/NZ workshops inspect at 60,000 km and change around 90,000–100,000 km. For heavy duty use—towing, hills, heat, or frequent short trips—consider 40,000–60,000 km. CVT level must be set at a specific temperature using a scan tool, the 5EAT is usually simpler but still benefits from measured fills.
  • What are signs the Exiga’s transmission fluid needs attention?
Shudder on take-off, flare between ratios, harsh shifts, whining, or fluid that’s dark/burnt or has debris. Any leaks around cooler lines or the pan should be sorted quickly to avoid low-fluid damage.
