Understanding Strut Mounts on the 2011 Mazda BT-50

The 2011 Mazda BT-50 is a popular mid-sized ute well-known for its ruggedness and reliability, especially when tackling both on-road and off-road conditions. For many vehicles, strut mounts play an essential role in the suspension system by connecting the strut assembly to the vehicle's chassis and offering a pivot point for the steering. However, when it comes to the 2011 Mazda BT-50, strut mounts as such are not part of the suspension setup. This comes down to the type of suspension system fitted to this model.

Unlike passenger cars that commonly use MacPherson struts in their front suspension, the 2011 Mazda BT-50 utilises a double wishbone (also called A-arm) suspension at the front and a leaf spring setup at the rear. The double wishbone design involves an upper and lower control arm with a coil spring and shock absorber, but it does not rely on struts that require mounts as found in MacPherson strut setups. Because of this, strut mounts are not relevant or used on the 2011 Mazda BT-50.

Now, why is this significant? The presence or absence of strut mounts comes down primarily to the type of suspension:

  • In MacPherson strut suspensions, the strut assembly is the main load-bearing suspension component, combining the shock absorber and coil spring in one unit. The strut mount allows this assembly to be bolted to the vehicle body while absorbing road vibrations and sometimes acting as a bearing to allow steering rotation.
  • With double wishbone suspension like the BT-50's, the coil spring and shock absorber are separate components and are mounted between control arms and the vehicle frame or chassis brackets. Since the strut is not used, there is no need for strut mounts.

The 2011 Mazda BT-50's double wishbone front suspension provides excellent wheel control and durability, making it well-suited for load carrying and tougher driving conditions - which is ideal given that many BT-50 owners use their ute as a workhorse or recreational vehicle. This design also simplifies maintenance in certain areas since separate shocks and springs can be replaced independently rather than as a combined strut assembly.

Although strut mounts are not part of the BT-50, it is still important for owners to regularly inspect and maintain the suspension components fitted to their ute. Shock absorbers, bushes, and control arm joints take on the critical roles in absorbing impacts, maintaining stability, and ensuring smooth ride quality. Worn shocks or bushes can lead to a harsh ride, poor handling, longer braking distances, and uneven tyre wear.

Here's some practical advice to keep the suspension in tip-top shape on a 2011 Mazda BT-50:

  • Regularly check the condition of the shock absorbers for leaks, dents, or damage. Shocks typically need replacement every 80,000 to 100,000 kilometres but assess based on driving conditions.
  • Inspect the rubber bushes on control arms and sway bars for cracking or deterioration. Replace any worn or damaged bushes to prevent clunking noises and maintain suspension geometry.
  • Keep an eye on the coil springs for signs of sagging or corrosion. Though typically durable, harsh off-road use may reduce their lifespan.
  • Listen for unusual noises while driving over bumps or during steering, which might indicate worn suspension components.
  • Have suspension and steering components periodically checked by a qualified mechanic, especially if you notice changes in handling or ride comfort.

By understanding that the 2011 Mazda BT-50 does not use strut mounts due to its suspension design, owners can better focus their maintenance efforts on the components that do reliability and performance justice. Maintaining the control arms, shocks, springs, and associated bushes ensures the ute remains safe, comfortable, and capable of handling whatever is thrown in its path.
