2010 Nissan X‑TRAIL knock sensor — what it does and when to sort it

Based on the Nissan X‑TRAIL T31 Electronic Service Manual (EC section) and Nissan parts catalogue data, the 2010 X‑TRAIL petrol variants (MR20DE 2.0 and QR25DE 2.5) are fitted with a knock sensor (KS) monitored by the ECM, with DTCs such as P0325/P0327/P0328 listed for the circuit. The M9R 2.0 dCi diesel variant does not use a dedicated knock sensor, as diesel combustion is managed via injection timing, rail pressure and other feedback sensors, not spark knock control. So for 2010 petrol X‑TRAILs, the knock sensor is very much relevant.

On the petrol engines, the knock sensor is a piezoelectric microphone bolted to the engine block under the intake manifold. It “listens” for detonation (pinging) and lets the ECM trim ignition timing to protect the engine and keep performance and economy on point.
