Let the engine cool, relieve pressure, catch a litre or two of coolant, swap the sensor with a new O-ring, snug to spec (don’t overdo it with the spanner), then top up and bleed. The ambient sensor clips near the front bumper/grille, it’s usually a simple unplug-and-swap. Transmission temp sensors are generally internal to the valve body—leave those to a transmission specialist.
Signs it’s time to investigate include hard cold starts, rough idle, the radiator fan running when it shouldn’t, lousy fuel economy, an erratic temp gauge, weak A/C performance or the CVT/AT going into a protective mode on hot days. How do you tell if the ECT sensor is failing?
The giveaway is weird temperature behaviour: long crank on cold mornings, the radiator fan stuck on, or the gauge acting up. Fuel economy can go south as well. If the wiring and connector look fine, the sensor’s likely due.
