2010 Mazda Axela Wheel Hubs — What They Do and How to Look After Them
Wheel hubs are absolutely relevant and used on the 2010 Mazda Axela (BL series). Technical sources such as the Mazda BL Series Workshop Manual (2009–2013) and Mazda’s Electronic Parts Catalogue specify a hub-and-bearing arrangement on all four corners: the front uses a separate hub with a press-fit bearing in the steering knuckle, and the rear uses a bolt-on hub unit with an integrated ABS encoder. Major bearing manufacturers’ catalogues for the BL Axela/Mazda3 back this up, listing front press-fit bearings and rear hub assemblies for 2010 models.
On this Axela, the wheel hub is the central mounting point for the wheel and brake disc, and it houses or mates with the wheel bearing. It keeps the wheel turning smoothly, supports vehicle weight, and maintains precise alignment for braking and cornering. The studs are part of the hub assembly, and the ABS signal is read from an encoder ring at the hub/bearing, so a crook hub can also trigger ABS faults.
There’s no scheduled service interval for hubs because the bearings are sealed, but they should be inspected during tyre rotations and brake work. A quick check for play at 12 and 6 o’clock, a spin for roughness, and a listen for a humming or growling noise with road speed will tell a lot. Keep wheel mating faces clean, fit wheels dry (no lubricant on studs or nuts unless the workshop manual specifies otherwise), and always torque the wheel nuts to spec with a torque wrench.
- Common symptoms of wear: speed-dependent humming, ABS light on, uneven tyre wear, warmth at the hub after a drive, or free play when rocking the wheel.
- Fronts (press-fit): typically require a press and proper support fixtures
