2010 Ford Transit radiator-cap — is there one, and what to look for
For the 2010 Ford Transit (Mk7), a traditional radiator cap on the radiator itself isn’t used. Ford built this model with a sealed, pressurised cooling system that fills and vents via a remote coolant expansion tank (also called a header or degas bottle). The pressure cap lives on that tank, not on the radiator.

Ford’s workshop manual for the Transit (Cooling System, Section 303-03) diagrams a closed system with a remote expansion tank and a pressure-relief cap, and the radiator core has no filler neck. The 2010 Transit owner’s manual shows coolant checks and top-ups are done only at the translucent expansion tank. Ford’s parts catalogues for this model list a “coolant expansion tank cap” and no “radiator cap”. Put simply, searching for a cap on the radiator will come up empty because it wasn’t designed with one.
Why Ford skipped a radiator cap on the 2010 Transit:
- Better packaging and reliability: a remote tank makes front-end packaging easier and reduces joints and seals on the radiator.
- Self-bleeding and consistent pressure control: the expansion tank is the high point, helping purge air and maintain the correct pressure through a single, purpose-built pressure cap.
- Service simplicity: all checks, top-ups and cap inspections happen at the one tank, away from hot fans and tight spaces.
If the van’s losing coolant or running hot, the “cap” to check is the expansion tank cap. It’s a pressure-rated item with seals that age over time, if it can’t hold pressure, the coolant can boil earlier and vent. Look for perishing of the rubber seal, crusty coolant residue around the tank neck, or a cap that won’t hold pressure. Always work on the system only when it’s stone-cold.
