2009 Honda Odyssey fuel injectors — purpose, care, and when to service

Fuel injectors are absolutely fitted to the 2009 Honda Odyssey. Honda’s factory Service Manual for the 2009 Odyssey (PGM-FI section), the Honda Electronic Parts Catalogue, and independent technical databases (e.g., Mitchell1/ALLDATA) all detail a multi‑point, port fuel injection system on the J35 V6. Honda’s PGM‑FI controls six injectors—one per cylinder—metering petrol into the intake ports rather than direct into the combustion chamber.

On this Odyssey, the injectors’ job is to deliver the right amount of finely atomised fuel at the right moment so the engine starts cleanly, idles smoothly, pulls strongly, and keeps emissions and fuel use in check. The PCM (engine computer) times and trims each injector pulse using data from oxygen sensors, airflow/pressure sensors, coolant temp and throttle input. Because it’s port injection (not direct injection), intake valves tend to stay cleaner and injector noise is minimal.

Good servicing keeps the injectors happy for the long haul. Quality, detergent petrol and regular driving help prevent varnish and gum. As part of routine maintenance, many workshops in Aus/NZ will:

  • Run scan checks for fuel trims and misfire counters if there’s a rough idle, hesitation, or poor economy.
  • Perform balance/flow tests or ultrasonic cleaning if trims are high or a cylinder’s misfiring (P030x), or if lean codes appear.
  • Inspect for seepage at the rail and replace brittle O‑rings when disturbed.
