2009 Honda Elysion batteries
Honda technical sources—the 2009 Elysion Owner’s Manual, the factory Service Manual for the RC platform, and Honda’s Electronic Parts Catalogue—confirm the 2009 Honda Elysion uses a 12‑volt lead‑acid starting battery. Whether it’s the 2.4‑litre i‑VTEC four or the 3.5‑litre V6 with VCM, a correctly sized 12V battery is essential equipment on this model.
That 12V battery does more than crank the engine. It stabilises voltage for the ECU, fuel pump, ignition coils and lights, buffers the alternator during peak loads (demister, blower, sliding doors), and preserves memory for audio presets, windows and idle settings. A strong battery helps the alternator work less, which is kinder to belts and bearings and avoids dimming at night or a reluctant start on a frosty Kiwi or Tassie morning.
- Expect a service life of about 3–5 years in typical Australian and New Zealand conditions. After year three, ask for an annual conductance or load test.
- Select the correct JIS‑spec case and “L” terminal orientation (positive on the left with posts closest). Match or exceed the original cold‑cranking amps and capacity recommended in the owner’s manual.
- Keep terminals clean and tight, and ensure the hold‑down is secure so the case can’t vibrate. A light smear of dielectric grease helps resist corrosion.
- Do mostly short trips? Pop a smart charger on it monthly to top up, alternators aren’t designed to deep‑charge a tired battery.
- Parking under the bonnet heat and high loads (A/C, lights, audio) shortens life, if the vehicle sits for weeks, a maintainer will keep it happy.
Time to replace? Organise like‑for‑like and mind polarity. Wear eye protection, keep sparks away, and always disconnect the negative terminal first, reconnect negative last. Fit the new unit level and snug. After install, reset the clock and radio, some Elysion trims may need power window and idle relearns—follow the owner’s manual steps. If cranking is still slow or the battery lamp glows while driving, have the charging system checked (alternator output and belt condition). Recycle the old unit properly—lead‑acid is highly recyclable and most parts counters will take it.
What battery size fits a 2009 Honda Elysion?
Most 2009 Elysion variants take a JIS B24L case (positive on the left) under the bonnet, some V6 Prestige trims may specify a larger JIS D23L. Always confirm against the owner’s manual or the label on the existing battery, and match or exceed the original CCA and capacity.
How often should the battery be replaced?
Plan on 3–5 years, depending on climate and driving. Short, stop‑start trips, heat, and heavy electrical loads shorten life. After the third year, request an annual battery test so you can swap it before it strands the family.
Can the Elysion use an AGM or EFB battery?
Yes—many owners upgrade to AGM or EFB for better cycling and accessory loads. Ensure the case size and “L” terminal layout suit the tray and clamps, and that the charging system voltage is within the battery maker’s spec. Secure it properly and vent if the design requires it.
