2009 Ford Transit knock sensor: does it actually have one?
This one catches heaps of owners out. On Australian and New Zealand–delivered 2009 Ford Transit vans, the vast majority run Duratorq TDCi diesel engines (2.2, 2.4, or 3.2). On those diesel engines, Ford did not fit a knock sensor. That’s straight out of the Ford workshop information and parts catalogues for the 2006–2013 Transit range, plus independent service data (Haynes and Autodata) for the Duratorq diesel families. In other words, if it’s a 2009 Transit diesel, there isn’t a knock sensor to replace.
Why no knock sensor on the diesel? Traditional “spark knock” is a petrol problem. Diesels ignite fuel by compression, and their engine management (Bosch EDC16/EDC17 on these) controls combustion using injection timing, rail pressure, pilot/main injection events, boost and EGR. Those strategies manage combustion noise and pressure rise without needing a dedicated knock sensor. Ford’s diesel workshop manual sections for the Duratorq confirm the usual inventory of sensors (crank, cam, MAP/MAF, ECT, IAT, rail pressure, etc.) and no KS in the diesel harness or ECU pinout.
There is one exception: some markets received a rare petrol 2.3 Duratec Transit around this era. That petrol engine does use a block-mounted piezo knock sensor so the PCM can trim ignition timing under load or on lower-octane fuel. If someone’s chasing a P0325/P0330–type fault, it’s a clue they might have the petrol variant.
- Diesel Transits (2.2/2.4/3.2 Duratorq, 2009): no knock sensor fitted, not used by the ECU.
- Petrol Transit (2.3 Duratec, limited markets): knock sensor fitted to the block, used for ignition control.
To confirm what’s in the van, check the build plate for the engine code, run the VIN through Ford ETIS/Microcat at a dealer, or use the engine cover/label details. If it’s diesel, a search for a knock sensor will be a wild goose chase. If it’s the petrol 2.3, the sensor sits low on the block under the intake side and is serviced like any other Duratec knock sensor.
