2009 Ford Mondeo receiver-drier: what it does and when to replace it
On the 2009 Ford Mondeo (Mk4), a receiver-drier is used. In this Mondeo, the receiver-drier plays three key roles. First, it pulls moisture out of the refrigerant using a desiccant pack, preventing ice crystals and corrosive acids from forming inside the air-con. Second, it filters out fine debris to protect the TXV and compressor. Third, it acts as a small liquid reservoir on the high side so the TXV always gets a steady supply of liquid refrigerant. All up, it’s a modest part that quietly keeps the system reliable, cold, and long-lived.
There’s no fixed service interval for the receiver-drier. Instead, best practice is to replace it any time the A/C circuit has been opened to atmosphere (for example, changing a condenser, hose, or compressor), after a major leak, or following compressor failure/contamination. On the 2009 Mondeo, the drier is integrated into the condenser side tank. Some variants accept a replaceable drier cartridge, but many require replacing the condenser assembly to renew the desiccant.
