The crank angle sensor is the engine’s timekeeper. It reads a toothed wheel on the crankshaft and tells the powertrain control module exactly where the pistons are, plus how fast the crank is spinning. With that, the ECU times fuel injection and spark on the petrol models, and controls injection events on the TDCi diesels. It also enables misfire detection and smooth idle control. If the signal drops out, the ECU can’t reliably manage timing, so the Mondeo may crank for ages, run rough, or not start at all.
While it’s not a scheduled service item, it’s smart to keep an eye on it during regular servicing. Heat, oil contamination, and wiring fatigue are the usual culprits when faults crop up. Tell-tale symptoms include intermittent stalling, hesitation after warm-up, poor fuel economy, and a check-engine light with codes like P0335–P0339. A visual once-over under the bonnet for damaged loom insulation, loose connectors, or oil wicking into the plug can save a lot of head-scratching later. Avoid blasting the area with high-pressure water, and keep connectors clean and dry.
When replacement is needed, go for an OE or quality brand sensor that matches the engine code. Disconnect the battery negative, let the engine cool, and gain access to the sensor — typically low at the bellhousing on many TDCi diesels, or near the crank pulley/rear of the block on petrol variants. Remove the retaining bolt, ease the sensor out, and check for metal debris on the tip or a nicked O-ring. Lightly lubricate the new O-ring, route the harness neatly away from hot or moving parts, and secure the connector until it clicks. After fitting, clear any DTCs and perform a KAM (keep alive memory) reset or an idle relearn if your scan tool offers it. A short drive cycle — hot restart, steady cruise, and a few decel/idle events — helps the ECU refine its crank signal adaptation. If a no-start persists, double-check the connector, harness continuity, and the condition of the reluctor wheel.
Where is the crank angle sensor on a 2009 Ford Mondeo?
On most 2.0 and 1.8 TDCi diesels it’s mounted low at the gearbox bellhousing, reading the flywheel/reluctor. On Duratec petrol engines it’s usually near the crank pulley or at the rear of the block. Space is tight, so access can be easier from underneath with the car safely raised.
Can you drive with a faulty crank angle sensor?
Sometimes the car will still run, but it may stall, surge, or refuse to hot-start. Because the signal can drop out without warning, driving with a failing sensor risks sudden cut-out. Best bet is to diagnose promptly and sort the sensor or wiring before it leaves someone stranded.
Do you need a relearn after replacing the sensor?
Most Mondeo calibrations will adapt on their own after a short drive, but doing a KAM reset and clearing codes helps. If a scan tool offers an idle/throttle relearn, run it.
