2009 Ford Falcon crank-angle sensor (crankshaft position sensor) — what it does and how to look after it

The crank-angle sensor is the PCM’s timekeeper. It tracks crank speed and exact crank angle so the computer can fire the injectors and coils at the right moment, and it works in tandem with the cam sensor for proper phase. On the 4.0L Barra, the CKP typically mounts low on the left-hand side of the block near the transmission bellhousing to read a 36-1 style wheel, on the 5.4L V8 it’s positioned at the front near the crank pulley. If the signal goes missing, the engine may crank but won’t fire.
It isn’t a scheduled replacement item, but it’s smart to include some checks during major services (every 60,000–100,000 km): look for oil contamination, heat damage, or a chafed harness and loose connectors. A quick clean of the mounting face and a careful inspection of the wiring can save a no-start drama later.
