The 2008 Subaru Exiga is fitted with an engine oil filter. The oil filter’s job is simple but critical: keep the engine oil clean so the Exiga’s flat‑four runs sweet for the long haul. It traps metal particles, combustion by‑products, and general grit so those nasties don’t chew out bearings, cam lobes, and turbochargers (on GT models). A quality filter maintains oil flow and pressure, thanks to an internal bypass valve, while an anti‑drain‑back valve helps the oil light go out quickly on cold starts.

As part of routine servicing, the oil filter should be replaced at every oil change. For most Aussie and Kiwi drivers, a sensible interval is 10,000–12,500 km or 6–12 months, whichever comes first. If the vehicle is a turbo (GT), sees lots of short trips, towing, dusty roads, or hot conditions, tighten that up to about 7,500 km or 6 months. Always match the service interval to actual use, not just the calendar.

Lightly oil the new gasket, spin it on until the gasket touches, then tighten by hand a further three‑quarters of a turn. Don’t overdo it with a wrench. Dispose of used oil and filters responsibly.
