2008 Honda Civic temperature sensors — what they do and how to keep them reliable

Based on the Honda Factory Service Manual for the 2006–2011 Civic range, Honda parts catalogues and OBD‑II diagnostics, the 2008 Honda Civic uses several temperature sensors. These include the engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor, the intake air temperature (IAT) sensor, and—on many trims—ambient and cabin temperature sensors for climate control, as well as a transmission fluid temperature sensor on automatics.

The ECT sensor is the big one for engine health. It’s an NTC thermistor in the cooling circuit that tells the ECU how warm the engine is. That input controls cold‑start fuelling, ignition timing, idle speed, radiator fans and the dash gauge. A lazy or failed ECT can cause rough cold starts, the fans running at odd times, poor fuel use, or DTCs such as P0116, P0117, P0118 and P0128.

The IAT sensor watches the temperature of the air coming into the engine, usually built into the intake tract or mass‑airflow housing. Hotter air needs different fuelling, and on the R18 1.8‑litre the ECU trims for that constantly. Outside the bay, the ambient and cabin sensors help the climate control keep it comfy, while the auto trans uses fluid temperature to manage shifts and protect the box.

As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to pair coolant changes with a quick look at the ECT connector and wiring under the bonnet. Any green crust, brittle insulation or coolant staining is a hint to clean or replace. If the ECT needs swapping, drain a little coolant, use the correct deep socket, fit a new sealing washer, tighten to the workshop‑manual torque, then refill and bleed with Honda Type 2 coolant. Don’t use thread sealant unless specified. Catch spills and dispose of coolant responsibly. For the IAT, check the intake duct for dust or oil film and clean the sensor gently with MAF‑safe cleaner only.
