2008 Ford Fiesta MAP sensor — what it does and how to look after it

Technical sources including Ford service information (ETIS), mainstream repair data (Autodata), and the Haynes workshop manual for the 2002–2008 Fiesta family show that 2008 Ford Fiesta models (petrol Duratec and diesel Duratorq TDCi) are fitted with a MAP sensor. On turbo-diesels it’s also referred to as the boost pressure sensor. With that confirmed, here’s what owners should know about the part and how to keep it happy.

The MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor measures the pressure inside the intake manifold. The Fiesta’s engine computer uses that pressure reading along with intake air temperature and throttle position to figure out engine load, then trims fuel and ignition to suit. On TDCi models the same sensor lets the ECU track turbo boost. A healthy MAP sensor means smooth starts, clean idle, decent power up hills, and proper fuel economy.

When a MAP sensor starts to play up, the Fiesta can feel flat or surgey, burn more fuel than usual, or throw a check engine light. Typical fault codes include P0105–P0109 (especially P0106, P0107, P0108). Diesels might puff black smoke under load if the boost reading is off.

There’s no fixed replacement interval, so think of the MAP as a “inspect and clean” item during major servicing. Every 20,000–30,000 km, a quick look is worthwhile:

  • Locate it on the intake manifold (petrol) or on/near the manifold/boost pipe (TDCi).
  • Check the connector for corrosion, a shot of proper electrical contact cleaner won’t hurt.
  • If oily soot has built up on a diesel, remove the sensor and lightly clean the tip with electronics-safe MAF/MAP cleaner. Avoid harsh solvents and don’t scrub the sensing element.
  • Inspect the O-ring, replace if it’s nicked or flattened.

Replacing a tired sensor is straightforward. With ignition off, unplug the connector, remove the retaining screw (usually Torx), ease out the sensor, then fit the new one with a fresh O-ring. Nip the screw up gently—no gorilla torque. Choose a quality unit (Motorcraft/Bosch or equivalent), clear any stored codes, and let the ECU relearn by idling until warm and taking a short varied-speed drive.

Worth noting: some petrol Fiestas also run a MAF sensor, but the MAP still does critical load and transient calculations. Keeping it clean and correctly sealed is cheap insurance for smoother running and better economy across Aussie and Kiwi conditions.
