2007 Toyota Hilux Surf pedal pads — what they do and how to look after them
Based on Toyota’s technical publications for the N210-series Hilux Surf (2002–2009) — including the Toyota Electronic Parts Catalog and the factory Repair Manual/Inspection schedules — pedal pads are absolutely fitted and serviceable on the 2007 Toyota Hilux Surf. The EPC lists a replaceable rubber “Pad, Brake Pedal” for all variants and a “Pad, Clutch Pedal” on manual models. The accelerator is an electronic pedal assembly with an integral tread surface, not a separate rubber pad.
On this Hilux Surf, pedal pads are there for grip, comfort and safety. The ribbed rubber face helps boots bite into the pedal in the wet, off-road, or when there’s a bit of sand and mud from the beach. They also protect the metal pedal arm from wear and help maintain the intended pedal feel and height so braking and clutch modulation stay predictable.
As part of regular servicing, it’s smart to inspect pedal pads every 10,000–15,000 kilometres, or at each service. Tell-tale signs they’re due for replacement include a shiny or slippery surface, hardening or cracking, edges curling away from the pedal, or visible metal showing through. If a foot slips or the ribs are mostly gone, don’t muck about — swap them.
Replacing them is a simple DIY job: pull the old pad off, clean the pedal face with a mild degreaser, then warm the new rubber pad slightly and press it on, ensuring the lip fully seats around the metal plate. On automatic Surfs there’s just the brake pedal pad, on manuals, do the clutch at the same time so both feel consistent. The accelerator pedal generally shouldn’t get an add-on cover unless it’s a Toyota-approved accessory.
For Aussie and Kiwi roads, stick with genuine or high-quality aftermarket rubber pads. Avoid metal dress-up covers that can become slippery when wet or foul floor mats. Never stack a pad over a worn pad — that can reduce pedal travel and cause binding. Keep the area clean: knock off mud and sand after off-roading, and don’t use silicone or tyre shine on the pads as it’ll make them slick. A quick look during every service keeps the Surf safe, legal for WoF/regos, and comfortable to drive.
- If manual: replace both brake and clutch pads together for even feel.
- If automatic: inspect the single brake pad more often if you tow or tour.
- Always confirm the pad seats evenly around the pedal plate.
Does the 2007 Hilux Surf have replaceable pedal pads?
Yes. Toyota’s EPC lists a serviceable rubber pad for the brake pedal on all 2007 Hilux Surf models, and a clutch pedal pad on manuals. The accelerator pedal is a one-piece electronic unit without a separate rubber pad.
How often should pedal pads be replaced on a Hilux Surf?
There’s no fixed kilometre interval. Inspect at each service and replace when the surface is smooth, cracked, hardened, or your foot can slip. Many drivers see 3–7 years from a pad depending on use, boots, and off-road exposure.
Are aftermarket alloy pedal covers legal in Australia and New Zealand?
They can be, provided they’re secure and non-slip and don’t reduce pedal travel or interfere with mats. For Australia (ADR compliance) and NZ WoF, choose covers with grippy inserts and solid fixings, and check with your insurer or certifier if unsure.
