2007 Subaru Outback engine oil — what it does and how to look after it
Engine oil is absolutely relevant to, and used by, the 2007 Subaru Outback. Subaru’s 2007 Owner’s Manual and the Subaru Service and Warranty guides specify engine oil type, capacity and service intervals for the Outback’s 2.5-litre flat-four and 3.0-litre flat-six engines. These factory documents, along with SAE J300 viscosity standards and API service categories (e.g., API SM/ILSAC GF-4), confirm that the vehicle relies on the correct grade of engine oil for lubrication, cooling and protection.
For this Outback, engine oil keeps the boxer engine happy by reducing friction, carrying away heat, suspending contaminants and protecting against corrosion. It also helps the hydraulic lifters and variable valve timing behave as intended. Using the right oil grade and changing it on time is a big deal for longevity and smooth running.
Subaru specifies 5W-30 meeting API SM (or newer) and ILSAC GF-4 (or newer). Turbocharged variants prefer quality full synthetic, and Subaru guidance often tightens change intervals for turbos. In Aussie and Kiwi climates, some owners and workshops opt for 5W-40 where ambient temps are hotter or towing is frequent—always check the handbook for your engine code and climate chart.
As a rule of thumb for local servicing schedules: non-turbo models are typically serviced around every 10,000–12,500 km or 6 months, and turbo models closer to 5,000–7,500 km or 6 months, whichever comes first. Short trips, dusty roads, heavy loads or lots of idling call for the “severe” schedule. The 2.5-litre engines take roughly 4.0–4.5 litres with a filter change, while the 3.0-litre H6 is about 6.0 litres—fill gradually and confirm on the dipstick rather than chasing a number.
- Check the oil level monthly (and before big trips) on level ground with the engine warm and off for a few minutes.
- Use the correct spec oil and a quality filter
