2007 Mazda Axela MAP sensor: what’s actually fitted and when it matters
Per Mazda’s BK-series workshop manual (2004–2009) and the Mazda Electronic Parts Catalogue, most 2007 Mazda Axela (Mazda3) naturally aspirated engines use a hot-film MAF sensor as the primary load input, with barometric pressure sensing inside the PCM. A separate manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor isn’t fitted on those NA engines. The exception is the 2.3 DISI turbo model—sold as Axela MPS/Mazdaspeed3—which is documented with a dedicated intake manifold pressure (MAP/boost) sensor and a charge-pipe pressure/temperature sensor. These technical sources are clear: MAP sensor relevance depends on whether the car is the turbo MPS variant.

Why most 2007 Axelas don’t use a MAP sensor: Mazda engineered the NA MZR engines around a MAF strategy for precise airflow measurement and stable emissions control. With barometric pressure handled inside the PCM, there was no need to duplicate the job with a separate manifold pressure sensor on those trims, keeping complexity and cost down.
If the car is an Axela MPS, the MAP sensor absolutely matters. It reads the absolute pressure in the intake manifold so the ECU knows real-time engine load and boost, helping manage fuel, ignition, and turbo control. When it’s happy, the MPS pulls cleanly with solid throttle response and good fuel economy. When it isn’t, expect rough running, dodgy boost, poor economy, or limp mode—and fault codes like P0106, P0107 or P0108.
Servicing-wise, the MAP sensor isn’t a scheduled replacement item, but it does benefit from sensible checks. At service time, inspect the electrical connector for corrosion, make sure the harness isn’t chafed, and confirm the O-ring isn’t cracked. On turbo plumbing, any oil mist can film the sensor port, if you find residue, clean the port and surrounding area, and, if necessary, lightly mist the sensor tip with non-residue electronics cleaner—don’t touch the sensing element and let it dry fully before refitting. Always follow the factory torque spec for the retaining fastener and check nearby vacuum/boost hoses for splits or loose clamps, as leaks will mimic a bad sensor.
After replacement, clear codes, then perform an idle relearn if specified by the manual. A quick sanity check with a scan tool helps: with key on/engine off, MAP should read close to local atmospheric pressure, at warm idle, it should drop notably. If readings look off, re-check the seal, plumbing, and grounds before condemning the new part. Sticking with quality, OE-spec sensors saves headaches, especially on tuned or hard-driven MPS examples.
