2007 Ford Mondeo Thermostat Housing

According to Ford ETIS/TIS workshop procedures and the Haynes Ford Mondeo (2007–2012) manual, every 2007 Ford Mondeo—petrol and diesel—uses a thermostat and thermostat housing assembly. OEM parts catalogues list dedicated housings for the 1.6, 2.0, 2.3 Duratec, 2.5T, and 1.8/2.0 TDCi engines, so the thermostat housing is very much a fitted and relevant component on this model.

On the 2007 Mondeo, the thermostat housing does more than hold the thermostat. It’s the gateway for coolant flow between the engine and radiator, helping the engine warm up quickly and then stay right in its sweet spot. Many variants use a moulded composite (plastic) housing that also carries the coolant outlet, one or more sensors, and hose connections. Getting this part right keeps fuel economy steady, cabin heat reliable, and prevents costly overheating under the bonnet.

Mondeo owners often treat the housing as a “fit-and-forget” part, but age, heat cycles, and coolant quality can make the plastic go brittle or the seals flatten. A fresh housing and thermostat is sensible when any symptoms show, and it’s common practice to replace the thermostat and housing together as an assembly.

  • Common signs it’s due: sweet coolant odour, pink/white crust around the housing, drops under the front of the car, fluctuating temperature gauge, slow warm-up, fans running hard, or a P0128 code (coolant temperature below thermostat regulating range).
  • Service tips: use Ford-approved OAT coolant meeting WSS-M97B44-D (check the owner handbook for the exact spec and colour), always install new O-rings/gaskets, and clean the mating surface carefully.

Replacement is straightforward for a trained tech. Allow the engine to cool, depressurise the system, drain a few litres, remove the intake ducting as needed, unclamp hoses, then unbolt the housing. Fit the new unit with fresh seals, tighten to the workshop-manual torque, reconnect hoses, and refill/bleed. Bleeding typically involves setting the heater to hot, idling until the fans cycle, and topping up to the MAX mark once cool. Dispose of old coolant responsibly—pets and wildlife are attracted to its odour.

While not a scheduled replacement item, a housing that’s seeping or a thermostat that’s lazy should be sorted promptly. It’s often smart to add a fresh radiator cap and check hose clamps at the same time. Using quality parts and the correct coolant will help the Mondeo hold temperature perfectly across Aussie and Kiwi conditions.

  • Where is the thermostat housing on a 2007 Ford Mondeo?
It’s typically on the engine end of the upper radiator hose. On Duratec petrol engines it sits at the cylinder head’s timing belt/chain end
