2006 Toyota Ractis MAP sensor — fitment, purpose and servicing

On the 2006 Toyota Ractis, the MAP sensor keeps the engine management on-song by measuring the absolute pressure inside the intake manifold. The engine control module uses that pressure reading, along with intake air temperature and engine speed, to work out how much air is getting in. From there it can trim fuelling and ignition timing so the Ractis pulls cleanly, sips fuel, and meets emissions targets. On the 1.3L 2SZ-FE it’s a primary load input, on the 1.5L 1NZ-FE it works alongside the airflow and temperature signals to sharpen load calculation and diagnostics.

Inspect the electrical connector for corrosion, make sure the harness isn’t chafed, and confirm the O-ring or vacuum hose is sound. If there’s oily residue at the sensor port, clean only the manifold port and the outside of the sensor body, don’t spray solvent into the sensor. Use electronics-safe contact cleaner on the plug if needed.
Replacement is straightforward: key off, disconnect the plug, remove the retaining fastener(s), lift the sensor out, and swap the O-ring or hose if fitted. Refit the new unit, reconnect, then clear any codes and allow the ECU to relearn at idle. Sticking with genuine Toyota or OE-equivalent (DENSO) parts helps avoid driveability gremlins. If problems persist after replacement, check for vacuum leaks and confirm manifold pressure tracks correctly on a scan tool.
Where is the MAP sensor on a 2006 Toyota Ractis?
On most 1.3L 2SZ-FE models it’s bolted directly to the intake manifold near the throttle body. On 1.5L 1NZ-FE variants it’s also mounted on the manifold, sometimes via a short vacuum passage. It has a three-pin connector and a small pressure port facing the manifold.
How often should the MAP sensor be replaced?
There’s no fixed replacement interval. It’s a “check and only replace if faulty” item. Inspect it during regular services, and consider replacement if there are MAP-related fault codes, obvious contamination, or confirmed drift on a scan tool.
Can the Ractis run with a faulty or unplugged MAP sensor?
It may start and limp using fallback values, but fuel economy, power, and emissions will suffer and the check engine light will stay on. Prolonged driving like that isn’t recommended, as it can lead to carbon build-up or catalytic converter damage.
