2006 Toyota Camry Brake Fluid — What it does and how to look after it

Per Toyota’s 2006 Camry Owner’s Manual and the Toyota Repair Manual for the 2006 Camry (Brake System section), this model uses a conventional hydraulic braking system that requires DOT 3 brake fluid. Brake fluid is absolutely relevant and essential to the Camry’s braking performance.

Brake fluid’s job is to transfer the force from the brake pedal to the callipers and wheel cylinders with minimal compression, giving consistent stopping power. In a 2006 Camry, it also supports ABS operation by allowing the ABS actuator to modulate hydraulic pressure quickly and precisely. Quality DOT 3 fluid includes corrosion inhibitors and seal conditioners to protect the master cylinder, ABS modulator, lines and callipers, helping keep pedal feel firm and response predictable.

Because brake fluid is hygroscopic, it slowly absorbs moisture from the air. Water contamination lowers its boiling point and can lead to a long or spongy pedal on hard stops, plus internal corrosion of costly parts like the ABS actuator. For Australian and New Zealand workshop practice, a brake fluid flush every 2 years or around 40,000 km is commonly recommended, with level checks at each service.
