2006 Holden Commodore oil-pump: what it does and how to look after it

Based on Holden VZ/VE and WM workshop manuals, GM GlobalTIS/Service Information for the Alloytec V6 (3.6-litre LY7/LE0) and the LS-series V8s (5.7–6.0-litre), plus ACDelco/GM parts catalogues, the 2006 Holden Commodore is absolutely fitted with an engine oil pump. The Alloytec V6 uses a crank-driven gerotor pump integrated into the front timing cover, while the LS V8s run a front-mounted, crank-driven gerotor pump behind the harmonic balancer. So the oil-pump is relevant to every 2006 Commodore variant.

The oil-pump is the heart of the lubrication system, feeding pressurised oil to bearings, camshafts, lifters and timing gear, and whisking heat and debris away. Without healthy oil pressure, bearings fret, lifters tick, and timing chains can rattle—especially on cold starts. For a 2006 Commodore, keeping the pump happy starts with regular oil and filter changes at the recommended intervals, using the correct viscosity and specifications for local climate and driving. Clean oil is the pump’s best mate.

It’s not a routine replacement item, but it should be inspected any time the front of the engine is open. On the Alloytec V6, that’s typically during timing chain or front cover work
